The jokes wrote themselves. Failure to launch. Rapid unscheduled disassembly. Yet another way to fail to get to space. An event intended to showcase Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ tech and social savvy and Elon Musk’s new and improved Twitter did neither. Even in all the chaos, however, some crypto policy talk emerged.
One thing we learned on Wednesday: the correct number of employees required to successfully run an audio-only conferencing feature that was hurriedly launched in response to the rapid ascent of the Clubhouse app—remember Clubhouse?—is somewhere between 100 and three.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ much-heralded presidential campaign announcement, hosted on Twitter Spaces with Elon Musk, arguably got more attention and headlines than they could have imagined. Sadly, every single story led with the catastrophic failure of Twitter’s tech stack, putting in stark relief validation of months of criticism that the Tesla CEO had gone far beyond cutting the fat at the global social platform, and had removed critical muscle and bone.
Perhaps even more amusing or calamitous, depending on your position on DeSantis, was the post-Spaces attempts to spin the mess as a positive. Musk dismissed the “noise” and heralded an “all-time record for fundraising.”
Justin Sun’s TRON had a pretty good week, up 5.7% for the week and more than 16% for the month. This despite a March selloff sparked by the SEC filing charges against Sun and others for alleged TRON-related misdeeds, and the subsequent decision by Binance.US to drop the coin.
The project continues to push forward nonetheless, with a $100 million AI development fund, a new identity-focused token for the metaverse, and a successful showcase of TRON community creativity with its fourth hackathon (or ‘HackaTron’) last month.
The Tron blockchain is even credited with driving growth for Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin. The majority of USDT, approximately $46 billion, is issued on Tron, significantly more than the $36 billion issued on Ethereum.
