The Profile: The press baron of the digital age & the grittiest actor in HollywoodThis edition of The Profile features Mathias Döpfner, Sylvester Stallone, Jennifer Aniston, and more.
Good morning friends, My daughter turned 1 this weekend (!), so I took the time to revisit the post I wrote in January — only two months after she was born. I remember writing it in those a fog of sleeplessness and bone-chilling exhaustion. But now, as I re-read it, there’s so much wisdom that the readers of this newsletter shared, and I want to share it once again. There’s one specific piece of advice that resonates so deeply at this moment: Time is the best gift you can give your childHere’s the crazy thing about any relationship in life: It’s the mundane moments that determine its health and longevity. Reader C.J. says that the most important “thing” you can give your child is the gift of time. “I would tell myself to sit, read, play, create, laugh, cry, and talk with my child more with a great deal more presence while letting go of all the ‘have tos’ I thought were important,” she says. Some of my favorite childhood memories are pretty boring — riding a bike with my dad, laying in bed with my mom watching TV, and playing board games with my grandparents. But all of those memories have one thing in common — it was quality time spent with people I love. Reader N.H. reminds us that each phase goes by very fast, and you only get to parent your child one time. “Be bored with your child. Keep the phone away during those slow moments and really focus on her and on the relationship,” he says. “Sometimes, in those moments, magic happens. And those are the memories that will stay with you as everything else falls away.” … Read it in full below: The Profile
I became a parent two months ago. It’s surreal, but no one’s asking me about how surreal it is that there is a new full-blown human here now. Instead, this is the burning question they want me to answer: “So … do you still have time to write?” It’s a polite form of the clichéd question new moms get all the time: “How do you balance it all…

For the past decade, Döpfner has been transforming Springer into a digital player worldwide. In Europe, he owns Germany’s populist Bild and the upmarket broadsheet Die Welt. Last fall, he paid a billion dollars for Politico. Now, Springer is on a hiring spree to build what, in the words he uses with potential recruits, will be “a global quality journalism brand and that we count on for nonpartisan, open-ended curious journalism that is not in a political camp.” (New York Magazine) “He’s a controversial person, not everyone likes him, but there’s nobody who would say he’s not an agenda setter.” The man using psychedelics for physical healing: Jim Harris has made a recovery that once seemed implausible. In November 2014, a snowkiting accident in Chile changed how the mountaineering instructor turned adventure photographer moved through the world. Harris suffered a spinal-cord injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Then someone offered him magic mushrooms, which are packed with the psychoactive compound psilocybin, and a new chapter of healing began. (Outside Magazine) “In general, the physical and psychological worlds are not as separate as we like to think.” The grittiest actor in Hollywood: At 76 years old, the Hollywood icon is still fighting: On his battle for the ‘Rocky’ rights, the future of ‘Rambo,’ his pivot to TV (‘Tulsa King’ and a reality show), and the time he turned down $34 million for a movie role. This is a must-read about one of the most iconic actors of our time. (For more, check out Sylvester Stallone’s Profile Dossier here.) “Sometimes I put the work ahead of [my family], and that is a tragic mistake which won’t happen again.” The queen of comedy baring it all: Jennifer Aniston has spent most of her adult life in the spotlight, with all its glare. Now, at 53, she opens up and corrects “the narrative that I was just selfish” for not wanting kids. That’s the correction, she says: She did want kids. After years of IVF, drinking Chinese teas, and other remedies, she says, “I would’ve given anything if someone had said to me, ‘Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.’ You just don’t think it. So here I am today. The ship has sailed.” (Allure) “I would say my late 30s, 40s, I’d gone through really hard shit, and if it wasn’t for going through that, I would’ve never become who I was meant to be.” COMPANIES TO WATCH.Indonesia’s streaming giant: Vidio, an Indonesia-based streaming service, has cracked the code for what the masses actually watch, drawing tens of millions with teen fiction adaptations and premium sports. Vidio is succeeding where foreign competitors like Netflix and Disney+ have stumbled in Indonesia — by developing an acute sense for what Indonesians want to watch. Here’s the key to its success. (Rest of World) “Whatever works in other countries might not necessarily be 100% [replicated] here.” ✨ This installment of The Profile is free for everyone.
